Last Monday there was an open public meeting to discuss a proposed form district change in Southwest Jefferson County.
Why is this important you may ask?
Simply this change is to get the same form district approval that mirrors the one for the Outer Loop landfill. The landfill currently consists of approximately 784 acres and many believe it is getting full fast and there needs to be another landfill developed to replace it. The area in question now is well over 1000 acres and most believe it is designated to be the next landfill for our area.
Planning and zoning sent their "expert" Ed Mellett to respond to questions at this meeting. I wonder what qualifies as an expert. Mr. Mellett was specifically asked what benefit the form district change would have for residents.
He could not name one but said he was sure there would be in the future. And yep we will blindly believe him and this administration.
When Mr. Mellett was asked any specific questions he could not answer there are a couple of simple questions.
Why would you be an expert sent to answer questions when you couldn't answer them? If these public meetings are supposed to be to allay any fears by residents, why are no questions seemingly answered and all the people get are the standard sales pitch from so called experts?
Simple.
It all follows the same tired mantra of Abramson's world. Louisville News and Politics: Abramson and his Field of Dreams......
The people in the Southwest are being used. This administration and partners are in discussions (backed by their pet Councilmen Bob Henderson and Rick Blackwell) as looking to pump sewage from J-Town to the Southwest, Henderson has never seen a low income housing project he does not like, and now they are looking to make this area the new landfill dumping ground.
According to a courier article on April 5, 2008 this quote is noteworthy:
"Metro Mayor Jerry Abramson said he's been told that issues involving the plants are being worked out. One potential remedy to the Jeffersontown plant situation is to turn it into a pumping station and send its sewage to the newer, bigger West County Wastewater Treatment plant on the Ohio River in southwest Jefferson County.
"We want to ensure the infrastructure exists in the community for planned residential, retail, commercial and industrial growth," the mayor said."
Of course Henderson and Blackwell support this. It is a pathetic attempt to stifle growth in one area for the growth of another. In other words it would appear that Abramson has decided that Jeffersontown should grow and prosper but the Southwest should not.
I did not know he had the authority to decide who should prosper.
It is time ALL residents got involved in these issues and told this Mayor and his "experts" like Ed Mellett at Planning and Zoning to take a hike.
We know they will have plenty of trails to do that on anyway.
