Rumor has it that the Metro Council is in turmoil over the whole furlough deal. Seems there are some emails floating around that some Council members believe they, and their legislative aides (LA's), should be exempt as well.
They do however believe their staffers who work for the Council, and do the grunt work, should not be exempt. Talk about a slap in the face.
Great leadership huh?
Anyone on the Council want to take a stab at this rumor? The sooner the better.
It is going to be interesting to say the least what the final details on these budget cuts will be.
Stay tuned............

ReplyDeleteMetro Council employees such as the legislative aides are considered employees of the elected official in whose office they work. They are not subject to the directives of the Mayor so they are exempt from a mandatory furlough or wage give back.
ReplyDeleteIt may be interesting to see if any Council Members and their staff voluntarily agree to the furloughs. Most city workers don't have a choice, they have to give up three days pay.
ReplyDeleteDoesn't the mayor have like 23 aides himself? Why does he need so many?
ReplyDeleteMy suggestion: Cut out everything named after the mayor (hikes, parties, etc.) unless the mayor pays for it personally, and cut all of the council's discretionary funding. These days if you can't get a majority of the council to vote to fund something, it shouldn't be funded. And give a test to everyone at IPL to determine if they can tell a weed from the state flower, and let go all of them who can't. (There would be at least four, including the director, who would go.)
Every person on the council draws a check that has Jerry Abramson's signature on it.
ReplyDeleteThe mayor like his staff need to all take a pay cut and have job reductions, reassignments of positions, and a total makeover of the city government. Jerry Abramson needs to go and there needs to be term limits on the mayors office as well as Metro Council. Its time to clean out the trash from city government and get rid of those who are lying through their teeth.
ReplyDeleteNeeds to be a professional merit board to reassign these people and those who get the jobs should be based on merit not on political connections, corruption, and the good old boy system. Its a lot of reason why Louisville is losing out economically as well. Too much of who you know dictating who gets hired.
I agree totally on the makeover of City Government. They are way to top heavy and lack managerial expertise IMO.
ReplyDeleteAs far as term limits in Abramson's case there are limits.3 terms so he can run one more time in 2010. This limit was adopted from the Old City term limmit Jerry termed out on which led to Dave Armstrong's tenure.
With the approval of merger Abramson could run again since we are a "new" City.
I have been fighting for term limits for some time now. I agree with term limits at every level of government elected offcials as a general rule. Personally I prefer 2 4 year terms period. Thanks for writing.
Larry I could not agree more. Abramson is so top heavy in his administration it is a wonder to me anything gets done. So amany from the inside trell me horror stories of just how pathetic it really is.
ReplyDeleteIf you look at a lot of the "hikes' Parties, etc," look at where they are mostly located and who generally uses them or benefits from them.
Do you see many of them offered by the Mayor that would directly entice many outside his base?
thanks for the comments
